Waves of bubbles in basaltic magmas and lavas

چکیده
Initially homogeneous uspensions of bubbles in basaltic magmas and lava flows may become unstable and form rising waves or layers of bubbles. We derive a set of model equations for the two-phase (bubble-liquid) system and present the results of a linear stability analysis and numerical simulations. Periodic vesicle layers are preserved in Columbia l•iver flows with a spacing of •1 m; the prediction of the Stability analysis combined with a simple model for solidification of the lava suggests that vesicle layers may represent waves of bubbles formed within the flow. The spacing of layers is determined by a balance between the growth of bubbles and hydrodynamic self-diffusion. Vesicular layers preserved in Columbia l•iver flows may thus form by hydrodynamic processes and do not require the repeated injection of fresh volatile-rich magma or a periodic nucleation of bubbles. Waves of bubbles may also develop in magma chambers and conduits and could play a role in eruption dynamics.

Smith, D. R. and Leeman, W. P., 1993. The origin of Mount St. Helens andesites. J. Volcanol. Geotherm. Res., 55: 271-303. Mount St. Helens volcano has intermittently produced mainly dacitic products but occasionally erupted a more diverse suite of lavas including basalts and andesites. Petrogenetic relations between these magmas provide insight into the dynamics of the subjacent magma system. M...
متن کاملVesicle cylinders in vapor-differentiated basalt flows
Vesicle cylinders are vertical pipes filled with bubbles and residual melt that differentiate from diktytaxitic basalt flows during crystallization. They grow from about 0.25 m above the base of the flow to the bottom of the chilled flow top. Field relations limit their growth to the period between cessation of lava movement and deep penetration of columnar joints. Basalts containing vesicle cy...
متن کاملGeochemistry and Tectonic Setting of Pleistocene Basaltic Lava Flows in the Shahre-Babak Area, NW of Kerman, Iran: Implication for the Evolution of Urumieh- Dokhtar Magmatic Assemblage
Pleistocene basaltic lava flows, consisting of trachybasalt and basaltic trachyandesite, cover an area north-northwest of Shahre-Babak in southeastern Iran. The whole rock chemistry indicates that the lavas are dominantly alkaline and mildly calc-alkaline. Variation diagrams of SiO2 with major and trace elements are consistent with fractional crystallization processes involving olivine, pyroxen...

1-Introduction North western Iran are neighboring of the largest Turkey volcanic centers (e.g. Ararat, Nemrut, Tendürek and Süphan volcanoes), within the Turkish-Iranian orogenic plateau. Quaternary basaltic lavas from NW Azerbaijan are related to the on-going Arabia-Eurasia collision zone, and inherited by subduction of the Neo-Tethyan Ocean at a Late Eocene age (~ 35 Ma). The Quaternary lava...
متن کاملComposition of basaltic lavas sampled by phase-2 of the Hawaii Scientific Drilling Project: Geochemical stratigraphy and magma types
[1] This paper presents major and trace element compositions of lavas from the entire 3098 m stratigraphic section sampled by phase-2 of the Hawaii Scientific Drilling Project. The upper 245 m are lavas from Mauna Loa volcano, and the lower 2853 m are lavas and volcanoclastic rocks from Mauna Kea volcano. These intervals are inferred to represent about 100 ka and 400 ka respectively of the erup...
